...Extraordinary People In Politics...
 An interview with David Lammy

''There are 1,000 ways to be black''

In this interview, David Lammy speaks in response to David Starkey's remark about David Lammy sounding white because he is a well spoken, well educated black politician. After the riots that took place recently all over the country, David Starkey appeared on TV expressing his very ignorant and highly offensive views about "Black culture". Starkey erroneously believes "Black culture" is characterised by slang and grammatically incorrect statements and phrases. Insulting the Jamaican patois, he sarcastically repeated a series of statements made by young girls and boys who were involved in the riots, claiming that this was a key characteristic of the rioters. Starkey claimed that black culture was taking over the country, quoting and misinterpreting Enoch Powell view that black culture would permeate the white culture, he exclaimed that black culture was the reason for the riots and that the reason for white people's involvement was this permeation of black culture in society, deeming black culture, a violent one. Starkey then used the example of David Lammy being a black educated man, he argued that the tell tale signs of being educated and separate from this "black culture" was evident in those who are black but sound white. David Lammy shares his views on these views and statements in "There are 1,000 ways to be black"....

Occupation: stylist/ freelance photographer/ fashion blogger

When did you start blogging?
I started blogging only about a year ago!
What inspired you to make your blog?
My cousin really inspired me to start my own blog. I loved reading hers, and I thought it would be fun to try it out! I wanted a place where I could post my photography.
When did you realise fashion was a big part of your life?
Fashion became a big part of my life when I turned 16! That’s when I finally broke out of my shell and just wore what I wanted to wear.
What does fashion mean to you?
Fashion is a great way of expression, and its just nice to look good! The whole fashion industry is so exciting.
How do you incorporate fashion in your day to day life?
I love keeping up with trends and trying new things, but I only wear what I like! I just dress how I feel like dressing every day.
What would you say makes you an extraordinary person?
I think everyone is extraordinary in his or her own way! I think that being a mother is extraordinary! And I have a 2 year old daughter that I’m so proud of!
Did you/ do you have any insecurities and how did you turn them into positives in your life?
I learned a lot when I was pregnant. I learned that making the right choices is HARD. I chose to keep my daughter and she has been a blessing and has changed my whole life! I thought that I wasn’t going to be able to finish school or get a job, but I changed a lot of peoples’ views on teen moms.
What’s the secret to being immersed in the fashion world?
You really have to dedicate yourself to it. If you’re only halfway in, they’ll kick you out! haha
Tell us something random that most people don’t know about you:
I used to ride horses competitively! I used to jump and race!

A few pictures I saw on Vogue, I just love the vibe in these pictures. I LOVE FASHION! Don't you....
